Red Roof Inn - Handicap Bath Rehab Program
Project Description: Upgrade handicapped-accessible bathrooms in 54 Red Roof Inns throughout the Midwest and South and install ADA-compliant roll-in showers and other fixtures.
Principal Project Tasks:
Demolish existing bathroom, trench floors for new drains
Install new plumbing and electrical, fill and level trenched-out floor with concrete
Reinforce walls for handrails and other handicap accessories, repair drywall
Install new fixtures and tile; apply texture to ceiling and walls; do painting and other finish work
Challenge:
Coordinate work at multiple sites stretching from Florida to Michigan-anywhere from 45 minutes to six hours apart.
What Abat Accomplished:
We organized a "train" of six two- or three-man crews, one for each trade. Each crew was provided with its own truck and trailer. Crews would arrive on site, do their assigned job, clean up, and leave, to be followed by the next crew-typically one or two days per crew. A seventh crew transported supplies to each job site from a centrally located trailer for each cluster of job sites.
Key factors in the success of the project were excellent cooperation from Red Roof Inn management and staff; capable coordination by our Chicago-based office manager; and the skill, reliability, and work ethic of our crews, who worked six days per week with minimal supervision. Initially the work at each property required 10 days on average from start to finish; by halfway through the first phase, work at each site was completed in 5- 7 days. We completed an average of one property per day.
